Symptom 2: Diarrhea
Diarrhea might be a common symptom, often brushed aside, but it assumes a more sinister tone in the backdrop of gastrinoma. The reason lies in the mechanics of the digestive process. A stomach with too much acid due to the overactive gastrin production empties its contents into the intestines more rapidly than usual. This swiftness doesn’t allow the intestines ample time to absorb the liquid, leading to diarrhea.
For someone who frequently experiences diarrhea without an apparent cause, this can be frustrating and often debilitating. The regularity, frequency, and the unpredictability of these episodes can affect daily activities and quality of life. Moreover, there are hidden dangers. Persistent diarrhea can result in dehydration, a severe medical condition if left unchecked.
Besides dehydration, chronic diarrhea can also lead to weight loss and nutrient malabsorption. Vital nutrients get flushed out before the body has a chance to absorb them. Over time, this can lead to deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals. (2)
