Symptom 8. Changes in Heart Rate: The Cardiovascular Impact of Iodine Deficiency
Our eighth symptom is changes in heart rate. Thyroid hormones, the production of which depends on adequate iodine, are responsible for the proper functioning of our cardiovascular system, including heart rate. A deficiency in iodine can lead to an underproduction of these hormones, potentially resulting in noticeable heart rate changes.
Men with low iodine might experience either an unusually slow heart rate (bradycardia) or fast heart rate (tachycardia). They might notice palpitations, feelings of their heart pounding or fluttering, or even skipped beats.
Changes in heart rate can have far-reaching impacts on health and wellbeing. It can lead to dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath. If left unchecked, this could increase the risk of serious health conditions, including heart disease.
Heart rate changes should always be taken seriously. If you’re experiencing abnormal heart rhythms alongside other symptoms mentioned here, it’s critical to seek medical attention and investigate possible iodine deficiency. (8)
