Symptom 5: Unintended Weight Loss
Losing weight might be a cause for celebration for some, but when the pounds drop without reason, it’s unsettling. Unintended weight loss can be one of the more silent indicators of colorectal cancer. We’re not talking about a pound or two here; we’re discussing a significant drop that’s noticeable and occurs without a change in diet or activity levels.
So, why does this weight loss occur? The growing tumor might disrupt the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Even if one is consuming the same amount of food, the body is unable to extract the nutrients it needs, leading to weight loss. Moreover, the body’s energy expenditure rises as it tries to combat the disease, further accelerating the drop in weight.
Along with weight loss, there might be a noticeable dip in appetite. Foods that once seemed enticing might now seem bland or even repulsive. There might be instances of nausea post meals or an early feeling of fullness, preventing one from eating a regular portion.
As the body loses weight, muscle mass also takes a hit. This loss in muscle can result in reduced strength and endurance. Daily tasks, which require a certain level of physical effort, become challenging. The combination of muscle loss and fatigue can make one feel frail and weak, further impacting daily life. (5)
