Risk factor 12. Prior History of Thyroid Cancer or Other Neoplasms
Twelve on our list is a prior history of thyroid cancer or other neoplasms. It’s well-established that individuals who have had thyroid cancer once are at an increased risk of developing it again. This risk factor is largely due to the possibility of cancer recurrence, where cancer returns after treatment.
Also, having a history of other types of neoplasms, particularly endocrine neoplasms, can increase thyroid cancer risk. For example, individuals with a history of adrenal or pituitary tumors have a higher risk of developing thyroid cancer. This connection might be due to shared genetic or environmental risk factors between these conditions.
Regular follow-up is essential for individuals with a history of thyroid cancer or other neoplasms. Surveillance protocols typically involve periodic examinations, blood tests, and imaging studies to detect any signs of recurrence or new cancer development at an early stage.
Furthermore, it’s vital to understand that while the risk of recurrence or a new thyroid cancer is higher in these individuals, the overall prognosis remains good for most, particularly if the cancer is detected early.
