Risk factor 9. Family History of Thyroid Disease or Cancer – The Influence of Bloodline
While we’ve discussed specific genetic syndromes, the ninth risk factor broadens the scope to consider family history in general. Having a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, child) with a history of thyroid disease or thyroid cancer increases one’s risk of developing the disease.
The inherited risk can stem from both genetic factors and shared environmental or lifestyle factors. For instance, mutations in the FOXE1 gene, involved in thyroid development, have been associated with familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer. Yet, it’s also possible that family members share exposure to common environmental factors like certain dietary habits or radiation exposure.
Given this risk factor, it’s beneficial for individuals to be aware of their family health history. If you have a family history of thyroid problems, you should inform your healthcare provider, who might recommend earlier or more frequent screenings for thyroid disease. (9)
