5. Rapid Weight Loss
Unexpected and rapid weight loss is another red flag for Type 1 Diabetes. When the body can’t get energy from glucose, it starts to break down muscle and fat for fuel. This leads to weight loss, even if the individual’s eating habits haven’t changed.
For parents of children with T1D, this weight loss can be particularly alarming. Their child might be eating well, even more than usual, but still losing weight. It’s a confusing and worrying time, often leading to the search for medical advice and ultimately, a diagnosis.
Addressing this symptom involves starting insulin therapy, allowing the body to properly process glucose and stop the breakdown of muscle and fat. It’s a relief for many, as they start to see the weight stabilize and their strength return.
However, finding the right balance of insulin can be challenging. Too much can lead to weight gain, while too little can lead to weight loss. It’s a delicate balance, requiring constant monitoring and adjustments. (5)
