Increased sensitivity to light, also known as photophobia, is a common symptom of uveitis. Individuals with this condition may find it uncomfortable or even painful to be in brightly lit environments, such as outdoors on a sunny day or in a room with bright artificial lighting. Photophobia can be quite debilitating, as it may interfere with daily activities and overall quality of life.

The increased sensitivity to light can be attributed to the inflammation of the uvea, which may cause the iris to become more reactive to light. As a result, the pupil may not constrict as effectively, allowing more light to enter the eye and causing discomfort or pain.

To manage photophobia, it may be helpful to wear sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors or use light-dimming filters on electronic devices. It’s also a good idea to avoid direct sunlight and adjust indoor lighting to a more comfortable level. (3)
