Symptom 9. Eye Discharge: The Unpleasant Result of Uveitis-Related Irritation
In some cases, uveitis can cause an increase in eye discharge, which may be clear, watery, or even pus-like. This discharge is a result of the eye’s attempt to flush out irritants and reduce inflammation. The presence of eye discharge can be uncomfortable and may cause the eyelids to stick together, particularly upon waking.
While eye discharge can be a symptom of uveitis, it is also common in other eye conditions, such as conjunctivitis or dry eye syndrome. It is essential to consult an eye care professional to determine the cause of the discharge and receive appropriate treatment.
To alleviate eye discharge related to uveitis, your eye care professional may prescribe corticosteroid eye drops or other anti-inflammatory medications to reduce inflammation. Keeping the eye area clean and avoiding the use of contact lenses until the discharge has resolved may also help prevent further irritation or infection. (9)
