8. Changes in Gait – HAND’s Stealthy Footprint
Another significant symptom of HAND lies in its impact on gait or the way an individual walks. Changes in gait might be subtle at the beginning, making it easy for them to be brushed off as signs of fatigue or clumsiness. However, these changes are HAND’s stealthy footprint, indicating its presence.
Early signs may include a slightly altered stride or a mild difficulty in maintaining balance. The individual might appear a bit unsteady on their feet or might stumble occasionally. Despite these minor changes, they can still carry on with their usual activities without significant disruption.
As HAND progresses, these gait changes can become more pronounced. The individual might start walking more slowly, taking shorter steps, or having a wider stance to maintain balance. In more severe cases, they might experience ‘shuffling,’ where the feet barely leave the ground, creating a shuffling sound while walking.
Changes in gait can impact an individual’s independence and increase the risk of falls and injuries. However, these changes are not inevitable consequences of HAND. With early detection and appropriate interventions, it’s possible to manage this symptom effectively, preserving the person’s mobility and independence.
Each symptom of HAND, whether cognitive, motor, behavioral, or otherwise, weaves a complex tapestry of this disorder. By shedding light on these symptoms, we can empower ourselves to recognize HAND early, seek timely interventions, and support those affected to live a fulfilling life despite the disorder. (8)
