Symptom 6. Easy Bruising or Bleeding: A Subtle Sign of a Struggling Liver
Liver damage can impact the body’s ability to produce clotting factors, substances essential for proper blood clotting. As a result, individuals with liver dysfunction may experience easy bruising and bleeding, which should never be ignored.
Bruising occurs when blood vessels under the skin break or rupture, leading to the characteristic discoloration of the skin. In individuals with liver damage, the reduced production of clotting factors can make blood vessels more fragile and prone to damage. Even minor bumps or injuries can result in significant bruising.
Additionally, liver damage can affect platelet function. Platelets are blood cells responsible for forming blood clots to stop bleeding. When the liver is compromised, platelet counts may decrease, or their ability to function properly may be impaired, leading to a higher risk of bleeding episodes.
Easy bruising may also be accompanied by other signs of abnormal bleeding, such as prolonged bleeding from cuts or wounds, nosebleeds that are difficult to control, or heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding in women. (6)
