Symptom 4: Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing weight without trying might sound like a dream to some, but it could actually be a cause for concern. Unexplained weight loss, especially if it’s significant (more than 10% of your body weight) and happened in a short time span (within six months), might indicate a serious health issue, including head and neck cancer.
Weight loss in individuals with head and neck cancer can occur due to several reasons. The tumor itself can increase metabolism, leading to weight loss. Difficulty in swallowing, a common symptom in these cancers, can also contribute to a decrease in food intake, resulting in weight loss.
Remember, weight loss isn’t always a cause for concern. If you’ve recently made changes to your diet or started a new exercise regime, this might be the reason behind your weight loss. However, if you’re shedding pounds without any apparent reason, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. (4)
