5. Myocarditis – The Underestimated Nemesis
Myocarditis is an often-underestimated cause of left-sided heart failure. This condition is characterized by the inflammation of the heart muscle, known as the myocardium. Myocarditis can result from various infections, most commonly viral, but also bacterial, fungal, or parasitic.
In myocarditis, the inflammation damages the heart muscle, causing it to become thick and swollen. This swelling can lead to a condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy, where the heart’s ability to pump blood is compromised. As the disease progresses, it can result in the weakening of the left side of the heart, ultimately leading to left-sided heart failure.
The treatment approach for myocarditis primarily involves managing symptoms and eliminating the cause, if identifiable. The use of medication to reduce inflammation, manage symptoms, and treat any underlying cause is common. When addressed promptly, myocarditis can be controlled, preventing its progression to left-sided heart failure.
Understanding these causes of left-sided heart failure is a significant step in managing and even preventing this condition. By staying informed and proactive, we can ensure the best care for our hearts. (5)
