Symptom 13. Dehydration: A Potentially Serious Consequence of Ulcerative Colitis
Dehydration is a common but often overlooked symptom of ulcerative colitis. Chronic diarrhea, a key symptom of UC, can lead to significant fluid and electrolyte loss. Without proper replenishment, this can quickly result in dehydration.
The signs of dehydration can vary and may include increased thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, less frequent urination, and dark-colored urine. Severe dehydration can be serious and can lead to complications like low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, and in extreme cases, loss of consciousness or shock.
In individuals with UC, managing dehydration often involves managing the underlying cause, which in many cases is chronic diarrhea. This may involve medications to control the frequency and severity of diarrhea, and in some cases, intravenous fluid replacement may be necessary. (13)
