Another prominent symptom of UC is chronic diarrhea. When the colon and rectum are inflamed, they fail to perform their job effectively. One of the primary functions of these parts of the large intestine is to absorb water and form solid waste. In UC, this process is disrupted, leading to the frequent passing of loose, watery stools.
Experiencing diarrhea occasionally is quite common and can be due to various reasons, such as food poisoning or a stomach bug. However, when diarrhea becomes chronic, persisting for several weeks or more, it’s a sign that something more serious could be going on.
Moreover, diarrhea caused by UC is often accompanied by a sense of urgency. This means you might feel a sudden, compelling need to evacuate your bowels, sometimes without much warning.
