Fact 8: The Impact of HL Subtypes on Survival Rates
The survival rates for Hodgkin Lymphoma are also influenced by its subtype. HL is classified into two main types: Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma (CHL) and Nodular Lymphocyte-Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (NLPHL). Each has distinct characteristics and implications for treatment and survival rates.
CHL is the most common, accounting for about 95% of all HL cases. It’s further subdivided into four types based on cellular characteristics. CHL generally responds well to chemotherapy, and with current treatment approaches, the five-year survival rate is above 85%.
On the other hand, NLPHL is much rarer and behaves differently from CHL. This type of HL grows slowly and responds well to treatment. The five-year survival rate for NLPHL is over 90%.
The specific subtype of HL has a direct impact on the course of treatment and, therefore, on survival rates. Knowledge of these subtypes helps healthcare providers formulate effective treatment plans tailored to the individual’s specific diagnosis. (8)
