Finally, a key symptom of leukodystrophy is respiratory problems. Patients may struggle with breathlessness, even without any physical exertion. They might also experience frequent respiratory infections, which can further complicate their health status.
These respiratory issues are caused by the weakening of the respiratory muscles due to the nerve damage caused by leukodystrophy. As these muscles weaken, the patient’s ability to take deep breaths and effectively clear the lungs decreases. This can lead to a buildup of mucus in the lungs, making the patient more prone to infections.
Respiratory therapy, including exercises to improve lung function and techniques to clear the airways, can be helpful in managing these symptoms. In severe cases, patients might require assisted ventilation to support their breathing. (10)
