Fact 10. Hashimoto’s can Cause Fluctuating Thyroid Function
One of the interesting aspects of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is that it can cause fluctuations in thyroid hormone levels. This means that individuals with Hashimoto’s can occasionally have periods of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or increased thyroid activity interspersed with periods of hypothyroidism or even normal thyroid function. This phenomenon, often referred to as “Hashitoxicosis,” is usually temporary and eventually gives way to permanent hypothyroidism.
But what causes these fluctuations? As the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and damage, the stored thyroid hormones can sometimes leak out into the bloodstream.
This can temporarily elevate thyroid hormone levels and lead to symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as rapid heart rate, weight loss, and anxiety. This is typically followed by a phase of hypothyroidism once the leaked hormones have been depleted and the damaged thyroid can’t produce more. (10)
