Fact 11. Hashimoto’s Can be Associated with Other Autoimmune Conditions
Another important fact about Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is its association with other autoimmune diseases. People with Hashimoto’s have a higher risk of developing another autoimmune condition. This is because the immune system dysregulation at the heart of Hashimoto’s can affect other parts of the body as well.
The most common autoimmune conditions associated with Hashimoto’s include type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, Addison’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and vitiligo, among others. There’s also an autoimmune condition called autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) where multiple endocrine glands are affected by autoimmunity, and Hashimoto’s is often a part of this syndrome.
While it can be daunting to think about the possibility of dealing with another autoimmune disease, it’s important to remember that while the risk is higher, it’s not guaranteed. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider and proactive management of your health can go a long way in managing the symptoms and minimizing the impact on your quality of life. (11)
