Genetics play a significant role in Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. If you have a family member with Hashimoto’s disease, your risk of developing it is higher. Studies have indicated that Hashimoto’s often clusters in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition.

The genetic link of Hashimoto’s primarily lies in the HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) complex. This group of genes helps the immune system distinguish between the body’s own proteins and proteins made by foreign invaders (viruses and bacteria). Certain variations in genes in the HLA complex are associated with an increased risk of developing Hashimoto’s disease.

However, while genetics play a substantial role, they don’t tell the whole story. In fact, environmental factors are equally, if not more, important. These include factors like iodine intake, selenium deficiency, exposure to radiation or certain medications, and even some bacterial and viral infections. (5)
