Symptom 9: Tearing or Dry Eyes
In blepharospasm patients, it’s common to experience irregularities in tear production, leading to either excessive tearing or dry eyes. These symptoms are more than just a nuisance; they are signs of the neuromuscular disorder’s impact on the eye’s normal function.
Whether it’s excessive tears blurring vision or dry eyes causing discomfort, both scenarios can hinder daily tasks. Reading, using screens, driving, or any activity requiring clear vision can be significantly affected, impacting overall productivity and quality of life.
Excessive tearing might be interpreted as emotional upset, while dry, red eyes may be mistaken for illness or fatigue. These misconceptions can create social discomfort, further adding to the individual’s stress and anxiety.
Changes in tear production are often seen in blepharospasm. Combined with other symptoms like involuntary eye closure, facial spasms, or difficulty keeping eyes open, this symptom can aid in diagnosing blepharospasm.
Alleviating changes in tear production involves treating the underlying blepharospasm. Treatments range from medications and Botox injections to physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgery. For immediate relief from dry eyes, artificial tears can be helpful, while for excessive tearing, a warm compress may provide some comfort. (9)
