Type 6. Parkinson’s Disease Dementia: A Dual Challenge
Parkinson’s disease is primarily known as a movement disorder, but a significant percentage of people with Parkinson’s eventually develop dementia, known as Parkinson’s disease dementia.
The dementia symptoms usually appear in the later stages of Parkinson’s disease, typically several years after the onset of movement symptoms. These can include memory loss, difficulty concentrating, slowed thinking, and confusion.
People with Parkinson’s disease dementia may also experience hallucinations and delusions. They may see things that aren’t there, hold false beliefs, or become paranoid, causing distress for themselves and those around them. (6)
