10. Increased Dependency – Twilight’s Bind
As the sun sets, individuals with sundown syndrome may show an increased dependency on their caregivers. They might follow them around, constantly seeking reassurance or assistance. This increased dependency could be a coping mechanism to deal with their heightened confusion and fear.
Increased dependency is not only emotionally draining for the individual but also places a significant burden on the caregivers. It can rob them of their personal time, add to their stress, and potentially lead to caregiver burnout.
However, an increased dependency is not unique to sundown syndrome. Conditions like anxiety disorders, other types of dementia, or even the natural aging process can lead to similar behavior. Hence, as with all symptoms, it’s crucial to consider the entire picture and consult a healthcare professional before attributing this behavior to sundown syndrome. (10)
