Most people have had this unpleasant experience at least once. Though not a disease, it may be a symptom of a serious health problem. In this article we are going to take a look at the causes of vomiting as well as possible solutions to relieve them.
What is vomiting?
Vomiting is the emptying (“throwing up”) of stomach contents through the mouth. It’s a mechanical defense reflex intended to empty the stomach. It is usually preceded by nausea, but can also be provoked voluntarily. Symptoms that accompany vomiting vary depending on the cause.
There can be different types of vomit content:
- Food;
- Aqueous (with water);
- Bilious (with bile);
- Hemorrhagic (with blood);
Symptoms
Vomiting is sometimes accompanied by:
- A slightly accelerated heart rate;
- Cold sweats;
- Pallor;
- Hypersalivation (excess saliva in the mouth);
- Abdominal pain;
- Diarrhea;
Vomiting that lasts for more than a week is considered chronic.
