What causes vomiting?
Vomiting can have many reasons, which include:
- Gastroenteritis;
- Heavy consumption of alcohol;
- Indigestion;
- Vasovagal syncope;
- As a result of motion sickness;
- During a migraine episode;
- During an attack of hepatic colic;
- Food allergy;
- A side effect of anesthesia.
It may also be a symptom of a more serious illness:
- An infection of an organ in the abdomen;
- Appendicitis;
- Acute cholecystitis;
- Pyelonephritis;
- Meningitis;
- Intoxication;
- Oral intoxication;
- Poisoning by carbon monoxide, solvents;
- Myocardial infarction;
- Bowel obstruction.
Repeated vomiting can be linked to:
- Pregnancy: nearly 50% of pregnant women vomit during the first trimester;
- Anxiety can trigger vomiting;
- Food intolerance and in particular lactose intolerance;
- Anorexia and bulimia.
