How to diagnose

Vomiting rarely requires emergency medical attention. However, it is recommended to consult a doctor in the following situations:

  • High-risk groups: young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women.
  • If it lasts for several days without improvement, despite lifestyle and dietary measures and medication.

These signs indicate that you must seek medical help:

  • Vomiting worsens or persists after a few days;
  • New symptoms appear (fever, headache, weight loss, pain, confusion, etc.);
  • Signs of dehydration (thirst, dry mouth, folds in the skin, dark circles in the eyes, low volume of urine);
  • Presence of blood in the vomit.

If the general condition of the person worsens or if the vomiting is linked to intoxication, an emergency consultation is essential.

If necessary, additional tests may be prescribed to clarify the origin of the symptoms:

  • Pregnancy test;
  • Blood test;
  • Abdomino-pelvic ultrasound;
  • More rarely, fibroscopy or colonoscopy.
