What are the symptoms?
Atherosclerosis progresses slowly and silently. The first signs of cardiovascular damage will show when the blood flow becomes disturbed.
Symptoms and complications depend on the affected artery:
- if the coronary arteries are affected, typical symptoms of angina will show;
- if the neck and brain blood vessels are affected, the symptoms will be similar to a stroke;
- if the leg arteries are affected, this can lead to disorders related to Peripheral Arterial Disease.
It is crucial to be attentive to such warning signals and consult a doctor immediately. Regular check-ups are crucial in preventing dangerous damage.
How is it diagnosed?
The general procedure usually involves a questionnaire, measuring blood pressure and heart rate.
Often a blood test is necessary to measure cholesterolemia, triglycerides, blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, and uric acid levels.
Additional examinations may still be prescribed depending on the blood test: hormonal assessment, imaging examinations (electrocardiogram, Doppler ultrasound, arteriography, etc.).
