Symptom 7: Dystonia: The Uncontrolled Dance of NMS
Moving forward, we encounter dystonia – a lesser-known, yet potent symptom of NMS. Characterized by involuntary muscle contractions, dystonia paints a picture of a body dancing to its own erratic tune, beyond the control of its owner.
Dystonia’s impact on the body is a spectacle in itself. It forces the body into odd, sometimes painful postures. It’s like a rebellious marionette, refusing to follow the puppeteer’s commands, with each muscle contraction leading to a new, unanticipated move.
But what causes these uncontrolled muscle contractions? Once again, we turn to dopamine. As NMS upsets the dopamine equilibrium, the nervous system’s command over muscle control is compromised, leading to the characteristic spasms of dystonia.(7)
