Sign 5: Dark Urine and Pale Stools
The fifth sign of liver damage that we will discuss is changes in the color of your urine and stools. Dark urine and pale, clay-colored stools may be a sign that your liver isn’t processing bilirubin correctly. Bilirubin is what gives stool its brown color, so when the liver isn’t functioning properly, stool can become lighter in color. On the flip side, if bilirubin isn’t correctly eliminated from the body, it can make urine darker.
These changes in color are not always consistent and can sometimes be related to what you’ve eaten or drunk. However, if you notice a persistent change in the color of your urine or stools, it’s a good idea to seek medical advice. The color of your waste can give clues about the health of your liver and other parts of your digestive system. (5)
