Sign 8: Changes in Mental Function
Liver damage can also affect your mental function, leading to symptoms such as confusion, trouble concentrating, or changes in personality. This happens because a damaged liver can’t effectively remove toxins from the blood. These toxins can then build up in the brain, leading to a condition called hepatic encephalopathy.
Hepatic encephalopathy can range from mild to severe. In mild cases, you might have trouble with tasks that require a lot of mental effort, like balancing your checkbook or driving. In severe cases, hepatic encephalopathy can cause a coma.
If you notice changes in your mental function, it’s important to seek medical attention right away. These symptoms could be a sign of serious liver damage and require immediate treatment. (7)
