10. Eucalyptus
Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, eucalyptus helps reduce flu symptoms and relieves the respiratory tract. Its antispasmodic effect reduces coughing attacks and helps to unblock the nose and soothe a sore throat. It is also anti-inflammatory, a bronchodilator and expectorant. It allows the airways to relax and facilitates breathing.
Eucalyptus is best used in inhalation. Simply put 5 drops of essential oil in a bowl of hot water or in a steam vaporizer and inhale the steam for about ten minutes. Another way is to apply 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil on a handkerchief or on the wrists. Eucalyptus will decongest the bronchial tubes and relieve a wet cough.
Eucalyptus leaves can also be brewed to make a soothing, aromatic tea. To do this, add eucalyptus leaves to boiling water and cover for about 15 minutes. You can add honey to enhance the taste. Sipping this tea three or five times a day helps to treat congestion and coughs.
If nothing seems to help with the cough, or it persists for longer than a week, please seek medical attention. Home remedies can be effective, but it’s always best to consult a doctor.
