When to Seek Medical Help
Diarrhea should never be ignored. If you have tried all home remedies, symptoms last for more than 2 days and there is still no improvement, contact a doctor for advice.
There are also a few alarming signs which require urgent medical attention. If you’re an adult, they include:
- Persistent diarrhea over 3 days with no improvement;
- Severe stomach pain;
- Bloody or black stools;
- Signs of dehydration (little or no urination, extreme weakness, excessive thirst);
- Fever above 102°F (39°C).
In children, diarrhea can quickly lead to dehydration. Go to the ER or call a doctor if your child’s diarrhea doesn’t improve within 24 hours, or if there is:
- Fever above 102°F (39°C);
- Bloody or black stools;
- Signs of dehydration (crying without tears; no wet diapers in three hours; dry mouth or tongue).
Even though diarrhea is very common and often passes on its own within a few days, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on accompanying symptoms. Never hesitate to seek medical attention if anything worries you!
