Stick to a bland diet
If diarrhea lasts more than a couple of days, there need to be alterations to the diet. Eating foods high in fiber, fried foods and sugar-free foods can make it even worse. On the contrary, adding certain foods can help absorb water better and help you stay hydrated. Unfortunately, nausea and loss of appetite are common side-effects of diarrhea, which makes eating the last thing you want to do.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends sticking to the BRAT diet when having an episode of diarrhea. The BRAT diet is a highly recommended eating plan made up of four bland, low-fiber foods which help to ease digestive distress. BRAT stands for:
- Bananas;
- Rice;
- Applesauce;
- Toast.
You can start by adding other easily digestible foods as soon as the diarrhea symptoms begin improving. Start with small portions and carefully listen to the body’s response. Gradually re-introduce boiled or baked chicken breasts, baked potatoes, chicken broth or soup, and oatmeal.
