Take Medication
There is an abundance of over-the-counter drugs that are very helpful in alleviating diarrhea. As it often comes with pain and discomfort due to intestine wall contraction, one of the most helpful medicines to take is loperamide, which regulates intestinal motility. It slows down intestinal movement and is often sold under the brand name Imodium. Keep in mind that Loperamide can sometimes cause constipation, so it’s best to consult a pharmacist.
Other non-prescription medications can be quite effective, especially those containing bismuth subsalicylates, such as Pepto-Bismol.
If there is any abdominal pain or cramps, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or drotaverine (No-Spa) may help. It’s best not to take any anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, as they can further irritate the stomach.
Absorbents (for example, Kaopectate, aluminum hydroxide) can be helpful, even though they are not absorbed in the intestine. However, when they pass through it they absorb gas, toxins, excess fluid and reduce diarrhea-associated symptoms, which quickly makes you feel better. But take absorbents with caution, especially if you have had any trouble with intestinal absorption in the past. It’s best to consult a pharmacist.
