6. Ligament Injuries: The Sprain Strain
Ligament injuries, commonly referred to as sprains, occur when a ligament – the fibrous tissue that connects bones – is stretched or torn. This can cause pain, swelling, and instability in the affected joint. Ligament injuries are most often the result of sudden movements or trauma, such as twisting an ankle or landing awkwardly during physical activity.
Treatment for ligament injuries typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to reduce pain and swelling. Depending on the severity of the injury, physical therapy or even surgery may be necessary to repair the damaged ligament and restore joint function. (6)
