11. Dry Eyes and Mouth: Symptoms of Sjogren’s Syndrome in RA
Some individuals with rheumatoid arthritis may also develop Sjogren’s syndrome, a condition characterized by dry eyes and mouth. Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that affects the glands responsible for producing tears and saliva, leading to decreased production and resulting in dryness.
Symptoms of dry eyes can include itching, burning, redness, and a gritty sensation, while dry mouth can cause difficulty swallowing, speaking, or eating, as well as an increased risk of dental problems. These symptoms can add to the challenges faced by individuals with RA and may require additional treatments, such as artificial tears or saliva substitutes.
If you have rheumatoid arthritis and are experiencing dry eyes and mouth, it is essential to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider, as they may be indicative of an additional autoimmune condition requiring management. (11)
