13. Muscle Weakness: A Result of Inactivity and Deconditioning in RA
Muscle weakness is a common complaint among individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. This weakness can result from a combination of factors, including inactivity due to pain and stiffness, as well as muscle atrophy caused by disuse and inflammation. Muscle weakness can further contribute to joint instability and a decreased range of motion, making it more difficult to perform daily activities and maintain a good quality of life.
To combat muscle weakness, individuals with RA should engage in regular physical activity and strength training exercises, as tolerated. Working with a physical therapist can help to develop a tailored exercise program that takes into account individual limitations and focuses on strengthening the muscles that support affected joints.
