Hypothyroidism Diet: Increase Thyroid Function

Foods rich in Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D are very common for many patients with hypothyroidism due to decreased vitamin D absorption. Vitamin D is necessary for T3 to enter the cells. It is mainly synthesized by the skin if it is sufficiently exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, however, there are some foods that naturally contain it:

  • Oily fish;
  • Shiitake mushrooms;
  • Egg yolks;
  • Dark chocolate.

Other sources of vitamin D in our diet come from fortified foods such as milk and margarine.
