Triglycerides Levels

What causes high triglycerides?

Causes of high triglyceride levels can be primary or secondary. Primary causes refer to genetic conditions in which triglycerides (familial hypertriglyceridemia) or both triglycerides and cholesterol (familial combined hyperlipidemia) are raised. [5]

Secondary refers to many other factors contributing to high levels of triglycerides, including:

        • Regularly eating more calories than you burn off (especially from foods rich in carbs);
        • Being overweight;
        • Smoking and drinking too much alcohol;
        • Certain medicine;
        • Thyroid diseases;
        • Poorly controlled type 2 diabetes;
        • Liver or kidney diseases. [6]

In most cases, high triglycerides are simply a result of an unhealthy lifestyle with a lack of physical activity and a poor diet. You might consider them as one way to measure your general health in terms of diet and exercise. Thus, higher levels indicate that you consume too much refined and fatty foods, and aren’t active enough to burn the calories. [2]
