Fact 8: Nail Deformities and Periungual Warts
One of the most noticeable effects of periungual warts is the distortion they can cause in nail growth. As these warts develop at the juncture of the nail and skin, they can force the nail to grow in an unnatural direction. Over time, this can lead to a nail that looks twisted or misshapen.
Aside from the deformation, the presence of a wart can also lead to discoloration of the nail plate. You might find the nail taking on a yellowish or brownish hue. This discoloration is not just an aesthetic concern; it’s a sign that the nail’s health is compromised.
Periungual warts can sometimes lead to a condition known as onycholysis, where the nail plate starts to separate from the nail bed. This detachment can create a space under the nail where debris and bacteria can accumulate, potentially leading to secondary infections.
This condition involves a buildup of skin under the nail due to the presence of the wart. This buildup leads to the nail appearing raised or thicker than usual. Subungual hyperkeratosis can cause discomfort, especially when pressure is applied to the nail.
