Risk Groups.
CO is dangerous for everyone; however, the risk is higher for some groups:
- Pregnant women: Carbon monoxide poisoning increases the risk of death and developmental problems in the fetus, as fetal hemoglobin binds more easily to CO than adult hemoglobin.
- Young children breathe faster than adults and therefore absorb CO more quickly.
- Smokers.
- Elderly people, because they often have undiagnosed cardio-respiratory problems.
- Some professions are more exposed to the risk of CO poisoning: firemen, underground parking personnel, police ensuring traffic, and those working with gasoline engine machines.
- People with chronic cardiovascular diseases, thyroid disorders, asthma or anemia.
