Lifestyle and preventive measures
The impact of laryngitis can be reduced or even prevented with a few simple measures at home:
- Get a humidifier;
- Rest your voice;
- Eliminate the cause of laryngitis, or its contributing factors;
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration;
- Moisten the throat by using lozenges or gargling it with salt water;
- Wash your hands regularly;
- Use disposable tissues and throw them away immediately after use;
- Treat gastroesophageal reflux disease if you have it, asthma, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or respiratory allergies with appropriate treatment;
- Vaccinate your children against diphtheria, mumps, rubella, measles and hemophilus influenzae;
- If you often put strain on the voice, plan rest periods after each event;
- Regularly clean the nose and hands after sneezing;
- Sneeze and cough into your elbow or into a handkerchief;
- Ventilate the room regularly and maintain a warm temperature;
- Cover yourself and your child to protect them from the cold. But not too much, as this can be counterproductive and promote excessive sweating and cold snaps;
- Wear a mask.
