Home Treatment for Laryngitis

What to avoid?

  • Avoid clearing your throat, as it aggravates an already irritated zone;
  • Avoid whispering, it puts more stress on the vocal cords than speaking normally;
  • Avoid dirty places and exposure to irritant products (toxic vapors, tobacco smoke, dust pollution);
  • Avoid shouting or yelling;
  • Stop smoking;
  • Avoid hot and spicy food;
  • Avoid contact if you feel ill (or if the person is infected);
  • Do not drink alcohol or caffeine excessively;
  • Air conditioning during this period is best avoided;
  • Avoid decongestants. Over-the-counter cold medicines that contain decongestants can dry out your throat, causing further irritation.
