Dizziness: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Low blood sugar level

Hypoglycaemia (low glucose levels in the blood) mainly affects people with diabetes, especially those taking insulin. Dizziness is one of the early symptoms of hypoglycaemia. If left untreated, it can progress to collapsing or passing out. If, apart from dizziness there is also sweating, the heart is pounding fast or the hands are trembling, blood sugar must be checked. When it is less than 4mmol/L, it is too low and requires adjustment.

Breathing abnormally quickly (hyperventilation)

Rapid and deep breathing leads to exhaling an excessive amount of carbon dioxide and inhaling an excessive amount of oxygen, which causes a feeling of lightheadedness. This may particularly occur during stress or feeling anxious. Hyperventilation often accompanies anxiety and forms a vicious circle: the faster you breathe, the more anxious you get and the more anxious you get, the faster you breathe.
