What causes hypoglycemia?
Low blood sugar is especially common in patients with diabetes, because their pancreas cannot release the necessary amount of insulin to meet their body’s needs. Such people have to take insulin or special diabetes medicine to keep their blood sugar levels normal.
However, such situations as skipping a meal, increased physical activity, or drinking alcohol can cause blood glucose levels to drop. According to the results of a global study involving people with diabetes who take insulin, 4 in 5 type 1 diabetes patients, and almost half of type 2 diabetes patients suffered episodes of hypoglycemia at least once over a 4-week period.
Diabetes, however, is not the only factor which might trigger low blood sugar.
