Low Blood Sugar – Causes, Signs and Symptoms

Other factors can contribute, such as:

  • Drinking too much alcohol without eating enough can prevent your liver from releasing stored glucose into the blood, which causes hypoglycemia. Alcohol can also keep you from feeling the first symptoms of low blood glucose, which may have serious consequences.
  • Some illnesses, such as severe hepatitis or cirrhosis can also lead to hypoglycemia. Kidney disorders, in which your body is unable to excrete medications, can have its impact on glucose levels.
  • Fasting or malnutrition (when you don’t get enough carbohydrates during your meals).
  • Some medicines, such as quinine (used to treat malaria).
  • Pregnancy.
  • Insulinoma, a rare tumor of the pancreas, can cause your body to produce too much insulin and trigger hypoglycemia. [1]
  • Hypoglycemia is more common in people aged 65 and over.
  • Sometimes there might be no obvious reason why your blood sugar is low.
